A great place to start!
We’re starting with the basics because lots of smart people, like you and me, forget terms that they don't use every day.
We don't expect you to become a web developer. It’s just to help you understand what people are talking about… so developers don’t sound like aliens and your 10-year-old nephew stops rolling his eyes.
Why the Internet Feels So Confusing (And How to Fix Some of That)
8 & half things that can really help!Browsers
You’re already using a browser… you just may not realize it has a name.
URL = Domain = Web Address
Why three names for the same thing? Because one would’ve made too much sense.
Read More - Browsers
You use a browser every single day.
Probably multiple times a day.
And yet, if someone asked you what a browser is, there’s a good chance the answer would be:
👉 “Google?”
Not your fault. The internet did that.
So what is a browser?
A browser is just the app that lets you go to websites.
That’s it.
Nothing magical.
If you’re on a computer or phone, you’re using one of these:
• Safari (Apple likes this one)
• Chrome (Google really likes this one)
• Edge (Microsoft is trying again)
• Firefox (the quiet, dependable one nobody talks about)
That icon you click before you “go online”?
👉 That’s the browser.
URL = Domain = Web Address
The bar at the top (or bottom) people pretend doesn’t exist and go straight to Google instead?
👉 That’s where the website address goes.
You might hear it called:
- URL (sounds official)
- Stands for 'Uniform Resource Locator' AND... Nobody cares.
- Domain (sounds expensive)
- Only the people paying for it care.
- Web address (What? Plain English?)
- could it be this simple? Well... yes. Yes it could.
All three mean the same thing:
👉 the exact place you’re trying to go
It looks like this:
👉 computerinthepool.com
👉 gmail.com
👉 amazon.com
No secret code. No tech degree required.
Browsers vs Search Engines
You might say "Just Google it." You'd never say, "Just Chrome it."
Read More - Browsers vs Search Engines
You open the internet…
…and Google is just sitting there like it owns the place.
So your brain goes:
👉 “This is the internet.”
Not quite.
Yes you are on the internet but you used a browser to get there.
Google is just what you see when you arrive.
And yes…
You’re still going to say:
👉 “Just Google it.”
Everyone does 😄
Both work eventually but...
If you type:
👉 computerinthepool.com
in the top bar
You go straight there. No drama.
Type the same thing in Google…
Now you’re playing:
👉 “Pick the real one”
Helpful rule of thumb:
Top bar = take me there
Google = help me find it
Websites vs Apps
If it opens in a browser, it’s a website. Even if it looks like an app.
Read More - Websites vs Apps
Why both exist
A website is like the front of the building.
You can:
👉 look around
👉 read things
👉 figure out what you're paying for
👉 decide whether the app is something you want
An app is whatever room the company thinks you came for.
Sometimes that’s:
👉 the sales room (Amazon)
👉 the tool room (Excel)
👉 the hangout room (Facebook)
So what’s the difference?
Website = figure it out
App = do the thing
When it matters
If you’re:
• confused → go to the website
• trying to get something done → use the app
• stuck → switch rooms 😄
Bottom line
Same company.
The website shows you around.
The app puts you to work… or takes your money.
Accounts
You thought you created an account. What you actually created… is a live-in salesperson that follows you even into the bathroom.
Read More - Accounts
You sign up once.
Just once.
Now suddenly:
• emails
• notifications
• “We miss you!”
• “Don’t forget this!”
• “You left something in your cart!”
Reality
Every account wants:
👉 your email
👉 your password
👉 your attention
👉 and most decidedly… your money
Bottom line
Accounts help you log in.
But they also make sure…
👉 the company can log in to you
When is it actually worth creating an account?
“Why does a flashlight app need an account? Nobody knows.”
Here’s a quick rule of thumb:
If the account helps you:
👉 save something
👉 access something later
👉 protect something important
…okay, fair enough.
If it’s just there so they can:
👉 email you
👉 track you
👉 or “enhance your experience” 😏
…you might want to pause.
Easy gut check
Ask yourself:
👉 “Will I ever come back here?”
If the answer is:
• yes → account might make sense
• no → maybe don’t marry it on the first date
Bottom line
Not every “Sign Up” is a good idea.
Some are helpful.
Some are just… very committed salespeople waiting to happen 😄
2 Step Authentication
You got the password right. Now find the phone we sent the code to within 2 minutes and type it correctly or your barred for life.
Read More - 2 Step Authentication
You finally get your password right.
A miracle.
Immediately:
👉 “We’ve sent a code.”
Now begins 25 minutes of hair pulling:
• Which phone?
• Which email?
• Which app?
• Which person?? 😄
Because “2-step” really means…
Step 1: remember your password
Step 2: Then go on a scavenger hunt
Ways the code might show up
• text message
• email
• authenticator app
• a device you forgot you owned
And then there’s shared accounts
Now it’s:
👉 your phone
👉 your spouse’s phone
👉 your mom’s email
👉 your boss’s phone
So you’re sitting there like:
👉 “Did anyone just get a code???”
When it actually helps
• banking
• important accounts
• anything you really don’t want broken into
When it feels like a trap
- Essentially always
- when you’re in a hurry
- when the code doesn’t show up
- when it expires mid-typing 😄
Rule of thumb
If you don’t know where the code is going…
👉 logging in is about to become an event
Bottom line
Passwords say:
👉 “I think it’s me.”
2-step authentication says:
👉 “Let’s involve everyone you know and your whole family to be sure.”
The Best You Can Do… Maybe?
Pick one way to get your codes… and stick with it.
👉 same phone
👉 same email
👉 same app
If multiple people are involved:
👉 decide who gets the code
👉 before you’re locked out and yelling across the house
If it’s important:
👉 make sure you can access that phone or email
👉 even on your worst day
And if you’re thinking:
👉 “I’ll remember how I set this up later…”
You won’t 😄
Cookies (that annoying and alarming popup)
Cookies happen… and they ain’t all sugar cookies.
Read More - Cookies
Cookies have always been happening on every site, period. But that annoying and alarming popup about them? That's recent.
Why the pop-up exists now
Not because cookies are new.
Because someone finally said:
👉 “You should probably tell people you’re doing that.”
What cookies actually do
They remember things like:
• you were here
• what you clicked
• what you looked at
• what you almost bought
So what do most people do?
👉 Click Accept, move on and never think about it again
👉 Panic and leave the site not realizing that they've submitted to a Cookie already
👉 Reject all if possible and pray for the best
Bottom line
Cookies didn’t suddenly appear.
They just got introduced…
websites just have to:
👉 tell you about it
👉 and pretend you have a choice
The Best You Can Do… Maybe?
If you hate being stalked, take the time to:
👉 hit “Manage Settings”
👉 turn off what you can
👉 and pretend you’ll remember what you picked 😄
If you just want to get on with your life:
👉 click Accept and keep moving
Either way:
You should probably say a little prayer cause they don't have to be truthful, they just have to inform you now.
AI Updates - “You Don’t Exist”
You’ve been logged in for years. Suddenly: “We don’t recognize you.” Breathe, just breathe.
Read More - AI - You don't exist anymore
You’ve had this account forever.
You log in all the time.
Everything’s normal.
Then one day:
👉 “No account found.”
👉 “Email not recognized.”
👉 “Try creating a new account.”
…Excuse me??
This is NOT the usual problem
Normally:
• you forget your password
• you reset it
• you’re back in business
This is different.
You do everything right…
👉 and the system still acts like you’ve never existed 😄
What’s actually happening
Companies are adding new systems (hello, AI 👋)
And in the process:
👉 old data gets confused
👉 login systems change
👉 connections break
So now:
👉 your account is still there
👉 but the front door that's been open 24/7 is closed and locked.
Why this feels insane
Because:
• you KNOW your login is right
• you KNOW you’ve used it before
• and nothing you try works
Where people go wrong
They see:
👉 “Create a new account”
…and give up.
Now you’ve got:
• duplicate accounts
• missing history
• lost purchases
• things that don’t match anymore
Rule of thumb
If it suddenly says you don’t exist…
👉 don’t believe it
Bottom line
This isn’t you forgetting.
This is the system…
👉 forgetting you 😄
The Best You Can Do… Maybe?
DO NOT create a new account.
(Yes, even if it’s tempting.)
Instead:
👉 contact customer service / chat / support
👉 tell them your account is not being recognized
👉 ask them to restore or reconnect it
Be ready for:
• some back and forth
• verifying your info
• and a little patience
Because once you create a new account…
👉 it gets a LOT harder to fix the original one
Bottom line:
Starting over feels easy.
Getting your real account back…
👉 is the move you won’t regret
